Daviot Primary School News
May has been an exceedingly busy month, the main highlight being the success of the ECO committee and all the school in achieving the Green Flag Award. We were very pleased and relieved! We will now have a little celebration and erect our Green Flag in front of the school.
The P1-3 class enjoyed their Up, Down, Turn Around workshop at Strathdearn Primary. They investigated windmills and tested them using a fan. The P4-7 class were joined by Strathdearn pupils at Daviot Hall for an amusing show, with a serious message, called 'Future Earth'.
The P4-7 visit to Fairburn Activity Centre was a great day out with all the challenge of the ropes course, 60 foot tree climb and raft building. If it hadn’t been for the boys conspiring to push us into the water, the girls’ team would have won the raft race I’m sure. If you managed to escape falling into the muddy loch you certainly didn’t avoid all the flying buckets of water!
The P1-3 had a lovely day at Aigas Field Centre. Jo took them pond dipping where they caught a newt, caddisfly larvae and even a rare leech. They went tree shaking to catch minibeasts, then they took part in games in the woods, 'Bat and Moth' and 'Flood, Camouflage, Freeze!' The P4-7 visit to Aigas involved making a wormery and taking part in a recycling race.
We were lucky with our School Sports Day again this year, the weather stayed fine. The races were well organised by Mrs Danby. The children commented afterwards how much they loved all the events but particularly The Caber and Tug of War. However they did complain saying that Mr Brown had cheated in the Bean Bag Race and he had even tried to trip Abbie in his desperate attempt to reach the finish first.
The crews of the Jolly Rodger and The Royal Cannons docked at school on the 22nd of May. The Pirate Show was performed with gusto for the P4-7 class and then the Treasure Hunt commenced. The school resounded to cries of 'Shiver me timbers!' and 'Yo, ho, ho!' all day.
The school team performed well at the Inter School Sports at Bught Park. The team comprised of Ryan, Ashleigh, Calum, Georgia, Owen, Isobel and Thomas. The highlight was the relay race in which we came a creditable third place.
Miss Hay had an excellent teaching practice at the school and we all enjoyed having her here for her placement. We will all miss her a great deal and wish her luck in her new post in Dundee. I’m sure the children will have fond memories of making their kites and trying to launch them in the park.
The P4-6 children had an excellent visit to Dingwall Mart for the 'Fun with Food and Farming' organised by RHET on 5th June. The children visited a series of informative workshops with real farmers presenting the topics, this made the event particularly enjoyable and interesting. The children loved seeing all the animals close up and liked seeing the sheep shearing.
