During 2003 the community of Strathnairn took over the ownership of School and Milton woods in Farr. School Wood (approx. 12.14 hectares); which sits immediately behind Farr Primary School. Milton Wood (28 hectares) may be found opposite to the 'Rennie Macintosh' style houses at the west end of Farr. Both woodlands contain areas of environmental / scenic interest, and exhibit a mix of trees which offer a habitat for woodpeckers, red squirrels, foxes, bats, badgers etc. Access is easy using well defined footpaths and good car parking.

    SCHOOL WOOD
School Wood provides a range of habitats within a relatively small area; it is in close proximity to Farr School and has good access. The predominantly Scots pine wood is ideal for educational projects and projects with a wider conservation interest. An eco-friendly cabin was constructed in 2006 using timber from trees felled in Milton Wood. It is used as an outdoor classroom by the local primary school and as a unique venue for various events. The cabin is available for private use. For details contact the chairperson.

Future plans include the completion of a memorial bench and panorama of the strath from the west edge of the wood.

As part of “Safe Routes to School” the children walk through the woods to their school with the car park being used by the bus and parents as a drop of point. Locally this is known as “The Walking Bus”

    MILTON WOOD
Milton Wood is a pleasant place for a longer walk. The wood has an ecologically valuable and attractive riparian (river margin wet land) zone that provides a natural habitat for foxes, pheasants, woodpeckers, red squirrels, bats, badgers etc. The community recognise the importance of safeguarding and enhancing of these areas with opportunities to create improved access, opportunities for linking paths between the woods, provision for longer walks, geomorphological trails and archaeological interpretation. Opportunities abound for education at all levels.

There are lots of ways to get involved and have your say in how the woods are managed and the directors would really like to encourage as many of the community as possible to do so.

The management committee meets on the second Monday of every month, 7.30pm at Farr Hall - all are welcome to attend these meetings.

If conservation and maintenance appeals to you - please come along to our regular Volunteer Action days, held on the Saturday following the meeting at 10.30am - dress sensibly to take part in a range of practical tasks - For details contact the chairperson.

So please enjoy wandering the woods and please get involved with SCW in any way you can!
